Where's David?
In various places on this site there's a interactive "Where's David?" map in the sidebar. This page just shows a larger version along with an explanation.
While I'm travelling around the country and around the globe, I try to keep this map updated with my current position. This is for my friends and family, as well as for people interested in following along with what's happening on our photography workshops and expeditions. The map shows a line connecting the last month's worth of points, and by default is zoomed to around the last week (although due to the way Google Maps works it sometimes gets the zoom level wrong by one step). The most recent point shows up as green.
The points are added to the system via several methods:
- Via Yahoo's Fire Eagle service. Either through the Fire Eagle website or via the FireFone app on my iPhone.
- "OK" messages sent via my SPOT also feed new locations into my Fire Eagle setup.
SPOT works via the Globalstar satellite network, and thus works from remote locations across much of the globe. - We've added a new feed in 2011: using an Iridium phone (which works from EVERYWHERE on the globe) I can feed in new positions at the same time as making short blog posts.
While I'm around Melbourne the map isn't very interesting, but hopefully it's at least a bit interesting at other times!
During LuminOdysseys you can find some stories associated with these locations at the LuminOdyssey blog.
